Tech Troubles: Society Stuck to Their Screens?

I’m sitting in between all these teenage girls, just smiling, and thinking about how many episodes of Gaspard and Lisa I’ve missed now. You might be thinking about why a 7-year-old is self-torturing herself like this. Here’s why: My parents had some family come over, and almost all of their children were adolescent girls. My mom told me to sit with these teenyboppers, help them whenever needed, and follow them. And, oh yes I did. They sit for a few moments, talking about some girl who broke up with her boyfriend. Then they ask me for the Wifi password. I’m a smart kid, so from memory, I tell them. And then they take out their phones. And for the next 2 hours, that’s what they do. And for the remaining time, and sit there and either smile, nap, play with my finger, daydream, think, or say something “cute”. That was a pretty depressing day. This little memory was brought back from lubie’s suggestion: “ur next debate should b if people spend 2 much time on their phones??” A hearty

An Out of This World Debate: Life Beyond Earth?

A disk-shaped object with neon-green lights is spotted above a small farm in the countryside. It hovers along to a meadow, where there are some innocent cows grazing on grass, and others are sleeping. The strange object releases an odd beam of light onto one cow. The cow, still chewing grass, rises upward, and into the aircraft. The flying saucer zips away into the night with the cow. This sounds like a scene from a movie, I know. And not any movie, though. A movie about ALIENS…. You might have already guessed it. This week’s debate is… Drumroll, please… Do aliens exist?! This might sound stupid to some, and to others fascinating. By the word aliens, most people assume I’m going to be talking about those big-headed green creatures with black, bulging eyes. No. By aliens, I mean any living animal that is not native to Earth and resides beyond our planet. My explanation of aliens, is like WAAAY cooler than the first one. I honestly always thought that the way we imagined ali

A Sporty Disagreement: Soccer or Football?

I awoke to an eruption of noise in my living room. “Ugh,” I thought, “What the frick is happening in my house this time?” I sleepily walked into the living room and saw my family, and a bunch of our close friends sitting on the couch, sipping tea, eating ice cream, and watching television with more intensity than I’ve ever seen. My brother was yelling “Go Russia!” like crazy, and other people were shushing each other. I looked at the TV. They were watching the World Cup. Everyone in my family was rooting for Russia, cause’ all of our Middle Eastern countries had basically failed. Our only hope was our continent-neighbor: Russia. But Croatia won. With the World Cup craze, I decided to choose a “World Cuppy” topic: football or soccer? This great idea was given by my little brother, Hassan. A sporty shout-out to him! I honestly never really knew what to call it either. I was raised in America, so I learned it as the word soccer, but my grandpa called it football. But after doing

Algebra's Dad: Al-Khwarizmi or Diophantus?

Imagine yourself sitting in a boring class of mathematics in middle school. Ugh. The teacher rambles on and on. She’s talking about the history of algebra. Not very interesting, to most people, because that’s how you remember it. But to me, it’s fascinating. Then, she brings up something pretty cool. She says: “Some people believe that Al-Khwarizmi is the ‘father of algebra’ is, while others believe Diophantus is. It’s debatable students.” Hi everyone! You’re friendly neighborhood weekly debating blogger, Hibba is back and ready for action. I’d like to give a special shout-out to Lubna Murad for their FANTASTIC suggestion: Al-Khwarizmi or Diophantus? For those who are pretty young and don’t know what algebra is, and those who never really cared about math class, algebra is the part of mathematics in which letters and other general symbols are used to represent numbers and quantities in formulae and equations. And yes, formulae is the plural of formula. Not formulas. Here’
